i just went to this place called el camino on juniper it had grate design but food was bland but i did like the fact it was not grease but bland and the places i went had grease food and bland and wired color corn tortillasAre there any good mexican restaurant and sea food in san diego?
There is a lot of good Mexican in San Diego. However, Old Town is not the place to go.

What are some good things to do in San Diego/LA for a birthday?
I'm celebrating my birthday this weekend with a friend who will be coming into town. We've been to the Zoo and Wild Animal Park, but are looking for some other attractions here or nearby, somewhat affordable. Just looking for suggestions- events, restaurants, etc.What are some good things to do in San Diego/LA for a birthday?

By far I think Hillcrest is the coolest and hippest area in San Diego. It has some of the best dining in the area and some great bars including wine bars. It is considering the gay and lesbian area of San Diego which usually means edgier with more life and yes not filled with conservative yuppies. Over the last few years it has moved from being predominately gay and lesbian to being a blend of gay, straight, young and old, simply because people realized it is a great area to hang out in.

What are the cool, political, artsy neighbrhoods in San Diego?
Where one can walk to all the cool bars and restaurants.What are the cool, political, artsy neighbrhoods in San Diego?
As the other writer suggested, Hillcrest is a cool, politically active and artsy neighborhood. It does have some great restaurants and bars all within walking distance. It is also is within walking distance of all the great museums within Balboa Park. It was, and to some extent still is, the center for the gay community, so there may be a higher concentration of "gay bars" there. But, that's neither here nor there.
Here are some other suggestions as well:
The Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego has great bars, clubs and restaurants with a wide variety of pricing and style of dress. Live music or DJ's.
Pacific Beach, just blocks from the ocean, has numerous laid back bars and live music.
Ocean Beach is a very cool, laid back, politically active neighborhood with an active live music and bar scene.
You'll find art studios in each one of these neighborhoods.

San Diego is small and there are so many restaurants and hotels. La Valencia Hotel is where my daughter and her husband stayed for their wedding night. They loved it and its right in the middle of La Jolla. Lots of window shopping and the hotel is on the beach. Godd luck to you both many blessings.
