I am planning a trip to San Diego area, what is the location with restaurants, shopping, good beaches?

There are lots of beach hotels in San Diego. I would probably recommend that you stay in the Gaslamp Quarter and then take a trolley ride or ferry over to Coronado to spend a day on the beach. There are lots of restaurants and shopping opportunities in the Gaslamp...but this is downtown San Diego and the hotels are not beachfront....although some do have bay views (such as the Hyatt and the Marriott Marina.)

Stay at a hotel on Sunset Cliffs, or Newport Ave in Ocean Beach.

There are hotels that are literally 3 blocks from the beach at the most. The beach is fairly long, with 6 towers. And you dont have to worry about people walking their dog right next to you because there is a seperate beach for the dogs. There are many restraunts easily within walking distance from most hotels. And Newport has plenty of shops for just about every clothing taste.
If you truly want to go to San Diego, then go for it, but it is a little...well crazy. There is a smaller city just north of it called Oceanside. It is a really great place with lots of great beaches and hotels. The hotel prices are also cheaper there. I would recommend staying in Oceanside then driving to San Diego for shopping, food, etc. The beaches in San Diego aren't so great. They are too crowded and dirty. If you are looking for a quick bite to eat then try Angelo's Burgers. They have amazing food. If you want something more formal, there are lots of great restaurants in San Diego.I am planning a trip to San Diego area, what is the location with restaurants, shopping, good beaches?
I would go to either Pacific Beach or La Jolla. Pacific Beach is a more hip, young scene with a lot of 20-30 year olds. Lots of restaurants, boutiques, and a great beach scene. It's pretty easy to reach the area from downtown on the bus via Route 30 or Route 8/9.

La Jolla is nicer and more upscale. Lots of high end restaurants, shopping, and some of the best beaches and most scenic beaches in San Diego. Downtown La Jolla is where most of it is at, there is also an outdoor mall off La Jolla Village Drive up in northeast of downtown. Route 30 takes you from dowontown or Old Town to La Jolla.
You guys definitely want Pacific Beach. Stay somewhere near the Crystal Pier or even the Crystal Pier Hotel itself if you have the money and like little cottages over the water. Lots of great shops, restaurants, and bars. In PB you have to go to Konos and spend a morning eating a breakfast burrito and sipping coffee. It's the best. Have fun.
La Jolla has some good beaches inculding La Jolla Shores (the most "touristy" one), Windansea, and Marine St. There is also a street called Prospect St. with a bunch of amazing restaurants and shops.
Old Town.
well depending on where your from, i dont know if your used to having theme parks around, but there is one of the only 3 seaworlds in the country in san diego.
ok i dont know the answer to ur question but no matter what age u r u have 2 go 2 the san diego zoo! its awesome!
Head to Coronado. You'll have a blast. The beaches usually aren't too packed there and it's very pretty and away from a lot of the tourist sites. And Hotel Coronado is pretty historical too. Check that out.
Gaslamp district in downtown for dining, Pacific Beach for the young California Beach scene, and horton plaza + fasion valley for shopping.
