Best Sushi Restaurants:
Expensive - Japango's at the Aventine in UTC
Cheap - Sushi Deli 1 in Hillcrest on Washington Street
Best Thai Restaurants:
Expensive - Rama in the Gaslamp
Moderate - Celadon in HillcrestWhere are the best sushi bars in San Diego also tai restaurants?
There is a "poke" restaurant in the gas lamp area that is pretty good. Poke is a Hawaiian dish of raw cubes of fish served with soy and seaweed. yum.
I can agree that Japango in la Jolla across from the Four Seasons is excellent.Where are the best sushi bars in San Diego also tai restaurants?
I have some friends in East County who swear by Tokyo Sushi on El Cajon Blvd. in the College Area. The BEST Thai food is Sala Thai on the corner of College and El Cajon near SDSU. It is cheap and soooo good. I could eat there every day. Try the Fresh Spring Rolls.
Sushi on the Rock in La Jolla, they have the best rolls!

Sushi:
Sushi Deli (Hillcrest) - so cheap and so fresh. They also have a lot of other japanese food to choose from, and their rolls are awesome. Last time we went we spent $46 for 4 people and we ordered more food than we could possibly eat, and alcohol too, it's my favorite sushi place, but expect a line, it's always busy.
Benihana (Mission Valley) - Benihana has pricey sushi, but the portions are bigger too, so you don't need to order as much. The restaurant is also a lot of fun if you want a dinner show.
Toro Sushi (Mission Gorge)- All the medical staff at Zion swear by this place. I hear it's a little expensive, but that the quality is very good.
Todai (Mission Valley) - This one's a buffet. They carry 40 varieties of sushi, some better than others, and have many other choices as well, like snow crab legs, peel and eat shrimp, lobster, etc.
Thai:
Taste of Thai (Hillcrest) - A tiny restaurant with great spring rolls and Pad Thai, wonderful curries, and excellent service. Prices are average.
Celadon (Hillcrest) - Accross the street from Taste of Thai, this is the slightly more expensive of the two. Excellent food and lots of choices, beautiful presentation.
Jasmine/Jasmine Bistro (Clairemont/El Cajon) - Lots of great stuff on the menu, not all thai, but their thai dishes are awesome, they have my favorite Pad Thai in all of San Diego.
Hey Irish,
The place voted #1 sushi in San Diego is a place called Zensei Sushi, it's a little expensive, but usually busy so it must just be me.

My favorite sushi joint is Harney Sushi, in the Old Town area of San Diego. It's a little touristy there, but they mostly see locals, especially the service workers from the surrounding hotels and restaurants. The nice thing is that they have two rooms, the bar room has live DJ's and the staff and owners are on the younger side (mid 20's to late 20's) and every owner takes his turn at the sushi bar -- so you know it will be done right. The prices are terrific.

When you get here, look for a publication at the local liquor and convenience stores called "The Reader". It's a free publication that comes out on Wednesday nights and has coupons for both of these restaurants as well as many other sushi places in San Diego. Reviews for some are in the rear of the magazine.
Thai is a little different. Everyone in San Diego only likes one Thai place. If they like Taste of Thai, then they don't like Celadon, If they like Celadon, then they don't like Lotus Thai, etc. There are two area's for Thai food without driving for blocks and blocks. The 1st area is next to downtown called the GASLAMP. (Website is below)
It is the trendiest, not necessarily the best. It's an area to be SEEN IN. But I will admit, there is a lot to see. The Second area is just north of Downtown, it is called HILLCREST. (Website is below)
It's called bohemian, that's realtor speak for a lot of Gay people and Yuppies. Prices are better, the wait time is better than in the Gaslamp. As far as UTC/Golden Triangle and La Jolla. You would never be able to park a car or take a bus and just walk around looking at the different restaurants. It's a "keep the car with me" 'cause the next Thai restaurant is 1 mile away.
Good dining! Hope you enjoy my city :-D
James
p.s. the area's listed are not cities, they are communities of San Diego, so they may not be listed on certain maps. Look in the front of the yellow pages in your hotel room, those are the best maps :-p
