Also, since we do not know San Diego too well, I would greatly appreciate it if you leave any suggestions on where to visit or any activities we can do during our trip. Oh and if there are some MUST eat San Diego restaurants, it would be great if you guys could name some.

Of coarse you HAVE to see the "Plymouth rock" of the west coast! Presidio Hill and the Serra Museum Followed by "Old Town" and while in "Old Town" there is a Mexican restaurant there (the name escapes me but there's only one) that is cheap and GOOD. I might inject here that as far as Mexican food goes, California, San Diego in particular, has at LEAST as good but PROBABLY BETTER than Mexico itself.
Mission Bay is a must especially if you like boating, Sea World, the ZOO and the Balboa Park museums. And if you still need more San Pasqual has a Wild Animal Park that is great.
They have a tram system in SD that takes you close to almost anywhere you want to go, unless it has drastically changed lately, it's fairly safe.

What is the best way to get around San Diego?renting a car would be great if you decide to leave the city for any reason. the parks , the landscape, the beach, another town. 50 bucks a day or so. cant beat that.
San Diego is spread out into different communities.....making a car the best way to go.

You definitely need a car in San Diego. Our public transportation system will get you where you need to go, but it can be a hassle.
Let's see.... the best pizza is at Bronx Pizza on Washington in Hillcrest (which is home to a ton of great restaurants anyway, like Taste of Thai or Khyber Pass), good, affordable sushi is at any of the three Sushi Delis, you can get a gret burger in Ocean Beach at Hodad's on Newport, Eat some very delicious but slightly pricy seafood at King's in Mission Valley, the BEST dessert is at Extraordinary Dessers in Little Italy or Hillcrest on 5th, have (optional) vegan Mexican food at Pokez downtown or Casa Guadalajara in Old Town or Baja Betty's in Hillcrest, get a yummy breakfast at Hash House a Go-Go (also in Hillcrest on 5th), the Broken Yolk on Garnet in Pacific Beach, the Mission in Mission Beach, or an affordable, casual breakfast at The Big Kitchen on Grape in South park.... The Gaslamp Quarter downtown has tons of places to eat and lots of cool bars if you're of legal drinking age. And if that's the case...
You have to go to the Blarney Stone on Balboa and Genesee (not the one downtown!!) if you're here on a weekend night. It's my favorite bar ever, but be prepared to drink a lot. I also love Livewire on El Cajon. It's really dark and loud in there and they only take cash but they also only serve doubles. The Turf Supper Club on 25th in Golden Hill is pretty cool. It's also 21+ but you buy a steak and cook it yourself on a big communal grill. They're delicious and inexpensive. Again, there are a bunch of bars and clubs downtown but some are very expensive with dress codes and I personally stay away from that stuff. Pacific Beach also has a lot of bars that attract a younger college crowd. And after all that nighttime fun, you have to get a burrito at a Cotixan! At least that's where I'll be!
Check out Balboa park, drive over the Coronado Bridge, ride the super old wooden roller coaster at Belmont Park in Mission Beach, go to the zoo, cruise up the coast, catch some rays, watch the hang-gliders in Torrey Pines (as well as the nude beach...which actually isn't really what you think it is), go to a Padres game in our brand new ballpark, drive to the top of Mount Soledad in La Jolla...It's hard to suggest specific things since I don't know what you're into but these are things I enjoy.
Anyway, have a great time and enjoy my hometown!
1) Car Rental would be the easiest to see all the sites around San Diego. since all the great sites to see are spread out.
2) There is a trolley you could use to get to places too. like from the Fashion Valley Mall to Petco Park.
3) Cab= exspensive
4) Bus- public Transportation...but i think that buses are confusing since you don;t know the San Diego area that well.

The trolley is a great inexpensive way to get around S.D. or you can rent a car by the hour from flex car on Kettner blvd. you should definitely check out the gaslamp district if your over 21 it's the best place in downtown to get a drink or some dinner, there's an unlimited amount of restaurants clubs and lounges there. Seaport village, old town and Coronado are also good places to check out, although you can't take a trolley to Coronado there is a ferry that can take you there for about 6 bucks. little Italy is cool if you like Italian food, my favorite thing is the beach. mission beach is the best if your looking for a fun atmosphere. you should check out Altitude, it's a rooftop bar on top of the Marriott hotel in the gaslamp, if your looking for fine dining Croce's is great food. hope you have a good time, you can't really go wrong in S.D. it's Americas finest city!
