What is there to do in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, CA?

My girlfriend and I are going to San Diego next weekend. We are planning to stay in San Diego and possibly in the Gaslamp quarter? Is that a good place to stay? Also what are some good restaurants, sports bar, entertainment, malls etc. nearby? What is there to do in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, CA?
It's a nice downtown area. Lots of places to eat, drink and party. A very nice mall (Horton Plaza) right there. Everything is walkable. Also, well patrolled and safe if you stay in the gaslamp area. And of course it is centrally located with easy access to museums ferry to Catalina Island, Balboa Park/ Zoo, etc.

Consider the Horton Grand Hotel (www.hortongrand.com) in the middle of the Gas Lamp district (Wyatt Earp lived at this hotel for a while). It's a Victorian themed hotel with all rooms different. (Pay close attention to the room they assign you and make sure you are not subject to street noise.)
It is a great neiborhood to stay...

Let's put it this way:

YOU DON'T NEED A PLAN!

There's so many things to do there, there's a theatre, night clubs, restaurants: (mexican, indian, thai, persian, japanese, chinese)

there's retail stores, a huge mall with awesome stores, Petco Park, all within a 10 block ratio, perfect spot.

You'll love it.What is there to do in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, CA?
yes, the gaslamp is a good place to stay.

great restaurants and bars

nearby mall (Horton Plaza) and plenty of other shopping.

Balboa Park is 5 minutes away

Little Italy is also 5 minutes away

you can walk to the Bay and enjoy the maritime museums
Aside from the stuff the previous posters said, if you have a car you can drive over the bridge to Coronado Island, a cute town with lots of restaurants and cafes.
Tons of stuff to do. http://www.gaslamp.org/
