Help with San Diego, CA? Whats general lay of the land?

I am in all likelihood going to be moving to San Diego within the next several months. I need some advice on the lay of the land, generally speaking. For example, what to do, where to go, bars, restaurants, the whole nine yards. Thanks,

Hillcrest is the gay community here in San Diego, it's actually one of the better areas (but not everyone is ok with that). North Park is near there and pretty good as well.

Ocean Beach is where I live and it's very community based (very 420 friendly as well), my fiancee and I know pretty much all our neighbors, the bars know us by name (pizza place too), it's small about 7 sq miles and has the greatest farmers market every week. Parking does suck though, so make sure whatever place you get has a parking spot. we pay $1300 for a one bed room, one bath, with balcony, in a secured complex with pool and hot tub, less than one block from the water.

MB and PB are crowded and have horrible traffic, I avoid them at all costs, they have more of a party vibe and a lot of the college kids live there.
the gaslamp is really fun! it is a few blocks in downtown. Tons of bars and hundreds of restaraunts are in downtown. Seaport village is a nice place to visit once or twice.

Beaches are really nice here all the ones in northern county are really nice. tons of hippie surfers in encinitas/cardiff/solana beach/carlsbad

all of those towns are along the pacific coast highway just one valley after another. Cheaper younger culture exists more southern county.Help with San Diego, CA? Whats general lay of the land?
Just remember - the closer to the ocean you live, the more expensive!

Also true...temperature fluctuates by one degree for each mile you live inland from the ocean. Ex: If you live 20 miles east of the ocean, it's typically 20 degrees warmer (summer) and 20 degrees colder (winter.)

FYI

Some of the beach communities - Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach. (Of course, La Jolla - but that's for millionaires!)

Most family friendly neighborhood - Mira Mesa (92126).
There is Hillcrest area for good resturants, as well as little Italy. Stay away from the tourist places like seaport village and the gaslamp, unless you want to pay a lot. Padre games are fun as is going and walking around la jolla shores. Hope this helps.
A lot will depend on where you live.

sounds like you may want the Mission Bay area (Pacific beach, Mission beach, Ocean beach)
