You can live just about anywhere in San Diego county and be near enough to anything that you want to do - restaurants, shops, movies, etc. - with a short drive. There are malls just about everywhere.

But, be warned! This area has one of the highest cost of living levels in the country! If you don't have a good job lined up or are already employed, DON'T come to San Diego!

As far as being safe, you take your chances like everyone else, everywhere else. Just stay away from risky situations and use your own judgement. I've lived here all my life and haven't been in any danger from anyone else yet.San Diego - good areas to live?
I just spent 3 months in Oceanside, CA. up by the San Luis Rey Mission. Nice place. Couple of nice bars, lots of good restaurants, close the the Douglas Gate of the Marine base. Not too far from the beach, but I could've been closer for my taste. It's a "small town feel" with big town amenities.

Bunnies and coyotes on the lawn at night, and the shopping center is just 5 minutes away by car.
living downtown SD is a lot of fun. I also live just outside downtown, off the 94 and that was also nice. and i also had a place in lemon grove, which is about 10 minutes up the 94...really liked that a lot.
