What is the best way to get from San diego to South Lake Tahoe?

Plane, train, or automobile. Please give as much detail as possible. Any hotel or restaurant that are a must try or that you recommend in South lake tahoe? What is the best way to get from San diego to South Lake Tahoe?
Train will take forever. The nearest airport is closer to Reno, so you would either have to rent a car or find a hotel with a shuttle. Driving is probably the best option, although this time of year, you may have to put on chains.

Most of the hotels in South Lake Tahoe, CA date back to the Olympics in the 60s and are pretty run down. Last time I went, we stayed at the Embassy Suites right on the border, and it was very nice. The big 4 casino/hotels in Stateline, NV, are decent, if a bit dated. Since the last time I was there, about 6 years ago, Montbleu is a new hotel that has opened up, so that might be nice if they renovated the building.

The breakfast buffet at Harrah's is very, very good, and worth going to at least once, even if you stay at another hotel with their own breakfast. Harvey's had a pretty good seafood buffet last time I went. The Horizon buffet was very "meh," just a step above Hometown Buffet.

There is a relatively new shopping center in South Lake Tahoe CA, close to the border. They have lots of shops and restaurants. They also have a tram to Heavenly, which is a must, even if you don't plan on skiing - it has gorgeous views of the lake.

Anyway, based on my experience last time, Embassy Suites was the best hotel to stay at - nice rooms, no casino maze to get anywhere, steps away from casinos if you desire, and free cocktails in the evening.
