I don't want to spend my whole vacation walled up in some mass built resort there. any cool local spots to go hang out and have a couple of beers? any good restaurants or take away? cool things to do besides seaworld?I'm going to San Diego in two days and i was hoping some locals could give me some great not so touristy spots
Let's see:
No Sea World. No Zoo. No beaches (really)?
Ok. Tho all the interesting spots have tourists to some extent.
But: try the Scripps Aquaraum, not as touristy as Sea World. Up in the same area check out the folks doing hang gliding off the mountain there. You also can rent the wings, but if inexperienced will have to have an instructor with you. Cool, tho.
Try the bars and byways in Mission Beach. Narrow streets, little byways, interesting shops. Same for Ocean Beach, and the great pier. OB was the hippie place in the'60s and '70s, and a touch of that remains.
Take a walk through the old, and reputably haunted, Hotel Del Coronado, in Coronado. Big old hotel, very expensiive, but people are invited to walk the grounds. Try the less touristy but great Coronado beaches too.
This is also a good time to drive out to the Anza-Borrego desert, to see the desert plants in full and glorious bloom. Get a county map and take your rental car out I-8 East, to the desert.
If i thought about it for a while longer I could come up with probably a dozen more of the less visited but interesting SD places. But that's should be enough to start. (Oh yeah, Balboa Park on a weekend, for all the street acts, like mimes. And, in July and August, absolutely the Del Mar Racetrack, where you need not be a horseplayer go to have fun and drink beer. Sit in the infield area.)
The beaches, La Jolla, Pacific, Mission Bay, Coronado. Downtown Carlsbad has some great bars.I'm going to San Diego in two days and i was hoping some locals could give me some great not so touristy spots
head to Old Town. great restaurants, esp for Mexican and very historic. there will be tourists there but it isn't like sea world.
