Where's the best area of San Diego to stay in a hotel for two nights, no car?

My girlfriend and I are attending a conference in San Diego, and want to go two days early to see the sights. We won't have a car, so want to book a hotel in the best area for seeing the sights. The conference hotel is in the Mission Valley section of the city, and we don't know if we should just stay there for our extra days. It is an option.

Hotel and restaurant recommendations also welcome!

Thanks!Where's the best area of San Diego to stay in a hotel for two nights, no car?
the streets is the most natural you can get, though, try somewhere romantic....um olive garden works
I would book a hotel with a sea view. Try the following 4 star hotels:

Radison hotel Harbor View,

(619) 239-6800

Holiday Inn San Diego-On The Bay

(800) 345-8082.

Have a pleasant stay!Where's the best area of San Diego to stay in a hotel for two nights, no car?
I would stay in the Gaslamp...It's got a ton of restaurants, shopping, and nightlife..which is somewhat walkable...However, to see other sights in the city it is hard to get anywhere without some good transportation. The trolley is nice, but is limited...I would suggest renting a car if you don't want to pay a lot for a cab or spend your whole day on the bus. But, if you have enough time..... The zoo is awesome (will take up almost a full day), Coronado (check out Hotel Del Coronado) and La Jolla (Brockton Villa for a dinner with a great sunset) are beautiful (nice places to enjoy a lunch or dinner and to enjoy the ocean). People watching in Pacific or Ocean beach (Hodad's for an awesome beer and burger).

All in all, if you're staying in the Gaslamp..You can't go wrong. You will stumble upon a million restaurants to your liking and you can get to the bay quite easily. The problem is that SD is quite spread out and not very centralized. Hope you enjoy your

time!

btw, when my mom came to visit. she stayed at the Bristol Hotel in the Gaslamp. I don't think it was too horribly overpriced and it was a nice hotel.

oh, and balboa park in nice...the museums sometimes have good exhibits...and, the prado is a good lunch stop off. sit outside, it's very pretty.
Stay in Mission Valley. It is central to anywhere. You can take the Old Towne Trolley which will give you a narrative historical/hysterical tour of San Diego and has many stops at great points of interest with a trolley going to each location every 30 minutes.

I suggest Coronado. It's one of the nicest areas of San Diego with great clean beaches, and you can take the ferry across the bay to downtown where all of the restaurants and nightlife are. From Downtown you can hop on the trolley and get to Old town and other areas of the city (even mission valley) Go to Peohe's if you stay in Coronado. It's on the bay with great views of the San Diego skyline.
I suggest Old Town, the historic heart of San Diego. It is adjacent to Mission Valley, and contains perhaps 15-20 restaurants, dozens of shops, a historic state park, several hotels, museums, a playhouse, etc. The entire area, while fairly large, is pedestrian-friendly, and you can easily cover the entire area by foot. The trolley has a major stop there, and it is about a five minute ride to downtown and the gaslamp quarter. The trolley also goes to nearby Mission Valley.
