Cafe Sevilla on 4th near Market is good because they serve Tapas, which are appetizers, hot or cold and you share them between all of you. It's a really fun way to eat and each plate is from $5.95 - $8.00 meaning you could get 2 - 3 appetizers apiece and then have the variety of say 6 things for the two of you. Plus they have salsa dancing. Le Gran Tapas on B st (I think) has the same thing. If you've got kids, the Anthony's suggestion is perfect, because they have a kids menu and the kids can check out seals or birds and stuff while you're waiting for your table. They have the best chowder and my absolute favorite favorite salad a Crab Louie It's huge, with a mound of crab, and a couple of eggs, thousland island dressing and it's $15.00 but if you both got soup, you could easily split the salad..
I know this will help!

You have an opportunity to see the menu before you go.

Locate in a neighborhood you like.

Take a photo tour to get an idea of the atmosphere.

And get a good deal!

Hit the Italian area, try Hennessys, go over to Mexico, just ask!
Stop giving advice for chain restaurants! People dont come here to get advice on chain restaurants.

For under $20 per plate, I recommend the following local restaurants unique to San Diego:

1) Saigon on Fifth Avenue (Vietnamese) in Hillcrest.

2) DZ Akins (NY Style Deli) in the College Area

3) Celedon (Thai) in Hillcrest

4) Phil's BBQ (Informal dining) in Mission Hills. Way better than KC BBQ

5) Adams Avenue Grill (American) in University Heights

6) Korea House (Korean BBQ) in Kearny Mesa
Anthony's Downtown is good. Right next to the more expensive one is a small Fish and Chips place that is very good.

P.F Chang's. There is one next to Fashion Valley Mall, they have great chinese food.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of The Reader. You can find them in most San Diego grocery stores (they're free). Inside you'll find all kinds of reviews and coupons for GREAT restaurants all over San Diego county.

My personal fave is Chateau Orleans ( on Turquoise St. - Pacific Beach). They always have a coupon, you can even go on-line to get one. The food is FAB!!! And just a couple of doors down is The French Gourmet, which is great for dessert or breakfast.
