Carnitas Uruapan

8035 Broadway, Lemon Grove; (619) 462-0704.

In the tradition of its Tijuana namesake, Carnitas Uruapan in Lemon Grove offers tasty carnitas, some of the best in San Diego. The ambience is much more subdued than in the Tijuana restaurant, but when it comes to carnitas, it's hard to tell the difference.

Apart from the large, bright windows, there is little decor here: vinyl floors, formica tables, nondescript chairs 鈥?and pigs. Yes, you read that right 鈥?glass cases full of ceramic pigs, pi帽ata pigs hanging from the ceiling, piggy banks, stuffed pigs, dancing pigs, teakettle pigs 鈥?you get the idea.

And then, of course, there's the carnitas, marinated deep-fried pork served with plenty of cilantro, onions, tomatoes, lemon and your choice of flour or corn tortillas.

Let's not forget the outstanding frijoles. They're fried with lard 鈥?no olive oil here. It's a special, sinful treat.

The restaurant does have other offerings, and among the best are its shrimp dishes: rancheros (cooked with tomatoes, onions and peppers); empanizados (breaded); and al mojo de ajo. Sopes are fried masa saucers that are tender and doughy, topped with beef, beans, guacamole and sour cream. They are served with rice. Or try the chiles rellenos, which come with beans and rice.

In case you were wondering, there is a connection between this Carnitas Uruapan and the one in Tijuana. One of the owners of the restaurant south of the border was the uncle of the late Rogelio Rodriguez, original co-owner, with his wife, Margaret, of the local eatery, which has been in operation since 1992 鈥?seven years in Spring Valley and six in its present location.

A carnitas dinner for one is $5.95; for four, served family-style, $23.80. All the shrimp dishes are $9.95, the sopes $6.95 and the chiles rellenos $7.75. Carnitas Uruapan serves beers 鈥?some of them imported 鈥?and wine. Try the wine margaritas.

Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday-Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
Fidel's in Solona Beach is probably the best known by those of us that have been wandering around San Diego for some years.Whats your favorite Mexian restaurant in San Diego?
La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill

415 Horton Plz

Top quality skinless chicken and lean steak. And everthing's fresh and cooked to order. The prices are reasonable too. It's my favorite.

I also like Nati's. It at 1852 Bacon Street.
Avoid La Salsa... it's pretty good, but it's a chain. Go for the mom-and-pop places, like Bahia on El Cajon Blvd., or some of the places at the beach. Check out signonsandiego.com.
Tio Lios
El azteca on fletcher parkway by grossmont center if you want an awesome breakfast burrito. Lolitas in bonita if you want a good california burrito. Or santana's in el cajon or pt loma for some good carne asada nachos...
