What's a good mid-way point between Los Angeles and San Diego?

I'll be visiting from Atlanta and hoping that my cousin, who lives in San Diego, would want to come to Los Angeles to spend the weekend. With the likelihood that won't happen, what's a viable place in between, with decent restaurants, places to walk, things to see .... basically a good place to visit? (We'll be traveling in November.)

San Clemente or San Juan Capistrano. I like San Clemente more because it's a beach town and SJC is not. Main Street in San Clemente has shops, bars, restaurants and a nice pier.

SJC has a historical mission. Both have easy access off the 5 Freeway.
San Juan Capistrano...lovely shops, restaurants, historical Spanish Mission.What's a good mid-way point between Los Angeles and San Diego?
Somewhere in OC, maybe Laguna Beach or Anaheim.
