Why do people put San Diego on an artificial pedestal?

When it is clearly undeserved?

Perhaps they fail to recognize that:

- Outdoors/nature east of San Diego is dry, scrubby, and downright ugly (even Julian is a horrid little town)

- The beaches are ALWAYS freezing cold and extremely polluted

- The natives AND newcomers are equally backwards, provincial, rude, superficial, and conservative

- The quality of restaurants are subgrade and not even comparible to San Francisco

- The theatre scene is pathetic and doesn't even come close to Los Angeles or San Francisco

- The traffic on I-5, I-8, I-805, SR-163, I-15, is as bad or WORSE than I-405 in Los Angeles

- Salaries on average pay 40% less in San Diego than in LA or San Francisco

- Crime rates are skyrocketing

- San Diego pretends to be a "small town" when in fact it is the 2nd biggest city in California. Why do people put San Diego on an artificial pedestal?
I live near San Diego and I agree it isn't an amazing place to be. I think there are a lot of things to do here but the problem is getting to them! You have to sit in traffic pretty much no matter where you go and no matter what time of day. If you are out around 5:00 you might as well walk to wherever you have to go because you aren't going anywhere.

I recently moved here from a small town in NY and really think the people are mean! They want to be left alone and don't want to be bothered. Some beaches are nice like LaJolla but it gets crowded and I won't step foot in the water without a wet suit.

I think it's a nice place to visit but I am reconsidering my move here.
I live here, there are plently of people that are open, real and nice.

For those who have had bad experiences, give it another try.

SanDiego truly was a "smaller" town up until 20 years or so ago. I live in northern SanDiego-much nicer-slower atmosphere. North county SD is my favorite. There's going to be ***holes everywhere you go, seriously...open yourself back up to the nicer ones. Stop trying to look for friends at bars or parties and get involved in things that you like to do. There's so much to do here...I dont know how anybody can say Julian is a p.o.s. because it's beautiful, especially in the fall/winter. East of sandiego is desert so of course it's going to be hot and muggy...

You probably are in the ghetto area of SD. haha no wonder. Venture out, Mr.! Live on the WILD side! hahahaWhy do people put San Diego on an artificial pedestal?
If you hate it so much, get out!
wow. I didn't know that. Guess I'll email your info to two friends I have living out there right now (by choice). They may not realize how gruesome San Diego is. Guess I won't visit them, too. Too scary.

There's positive %26amp; negative about every city in the USA. It is still better than life for the people who are struggling day-to-day in countrys like Africa, Haiti, India, Iraq and on %26amp; on. I'd anyday take the worst city in the USA. Stop bellyaching about San Diego!

I lived there from '86 to '03.

Julian is very pretty.

Try LaJolla or Coronado for gorgeous beaches.

I never met any backwards......people there.

There are some great restaurants in the city. Ever go to the gaslamp quarter?

Don't know much about the theatre scene.

Yes, the traffic is bad during rush hour, like it is in all big cities.

Crime skyrocketing? Where do you live?

If you don't like it, move.
Jesus! Chill out. If you live there just move.
Listen, about the outdoors/ nature part if you knew how to apreciate anything you would easily be able to find the beauty in what we do have here in SD. There are some cities that have nothing but buildings, no green whatsoever.

What the heck do you expect the coast to feel like? I suppose you want it to feel like you're in the desert? Well, our beaches are not. Pollution is everywhere. I suggest you stop complaining about it and actually get your butt out there and help volunteer clean it. You know, like doing something a little bit more productive.

Honey this world has become ruder and ruder ever year, every place. Superficial? Not even as close as some of the other cities you stated. Conservative? What is conservative nowadays. Perhaps that is what this society needs a little of. "Conservative" isn't as uptight as it was before.

Quality of restaurants? Gee, have you seen what homeless children in Africa eat? Traffic. You have a car and also have the nerve to talk about pollution. About salaries, I don't get paid much, and I don't care. I'm not homless, I'm not struggling to eat and I don't need SO MUCH money to rent an expensive place (SF,NY), or to pay for celebrity parties (like LA) as I would in the other cities you mentioned. Crime is everywhere. It's just been "skyrocketing" on the news. San Diegans don't talk about san diego. People who visit sd talk about it. We would prefer for them not to, so we could have our old SD back, the one that had no traffic. The San Diego that everyone talks about today but isn't here. But, I think people who come and park their butt here 'cause of "what they heard" could get up and leave if they just want to trash talk san diego instead of helping make it better again.
"The theatre scene is pathetic and doesn't even come close to Los Angeles or San Francisco"

Don't make me laugh! LA theatre: A bunch of 40 seat "showcase" theatres where unemployed TV actors pay to be in shows. Do you have any idea how many Broadway directors, designers and actors come from San Diego. Ever her of Jack O'Brian, who won the Tony 3 out of the last 5 years, where do you think he has worked for the last 25 years? Every been to the La Jolla Playhouse, or are the scripts too complicated for you?
wow you must have had a really bad experience. Try hanging out at other parts of the city besides hanging out at Hillcrest so much.
this is what i've been telling people all along but some wont believe me. They think SD is this cool place but that is so far from the truth. I think people from the east coast or people who dont know much about Cali has this perception of SD. Everytime I go there, the people always put up a front. This city is full of FAKE, whining brats who only care about money money money or how big their house is. The people are disconnected from one another. I only go there when I need to, like visiting a family member, who I dislike but have to put up with just to make my mom happy. But if it was up to me, I'd never set foot in this city. Makes me love my home here in L.A. so much more!! Stick with L.A. or Orange County!
