The Gaslamp district near the convention system is awesome. More fun that anywhere in LA. But really, San Diego is one of the big tourist destinations in the world. Look up the city's web site.

You would probably enjoy the laid back young crowd that hangs out in Pacific Beach. The happy hour at Johnny V is a good deal....especially on Fridays when beer is only $2 and every drink comes with a free appetizer. An upscale bar and restaurant in Pacific Beach is JRDN...which has a great location as well.
The Gaslamp District is a vibrant neighborhood downtown with lots of nightclubs and restaurants. Most have a cover charge especially on weekends. One of my favorites is The Shout House which has dueling pianos and audience participation.
